What is "Energy Illiteracy"?
Picture someone who is 2.5 meters high and weighs 40 kilograms. Surely you can imagine the shape of that person's body, right?
Likewise when you think of a person 1.2 meters high and weighs 200 kilograms, you have no trouble imagining the shape of that person's body.
What does it mean? It means people are no longer "distance illiterate" nor "weight illiterate". With energy it's a different story.
We can say that nationwide, even worldwide, people are still "energy illiterate". (back to top)
Why do people experience energy illiteracy?
Because in the energy world, when people talk about energy,
they seldom use the correct unit of measurement for energy. This is why
people cannot compare electrical energy and other energy derived from fuel, such as from oil, etc., although
they are all energy that can be measured in Joules. (back to top)
Why is energy illiteracy a problem?
Because in a society that is still energy illiterate, it is dificult to open one's eyes towards the "alternative"
source that are actually in abundance in almost every country. Even all the policies, proposed in the past as solutions
to surmount the energy crisis problem, turned out to be off-target. Also we are still unable to make the right choices
when choosing devices that consume energy, such as electrical appliances, cooking appliances, and even cars. The public awareness
about energy cannot be raised yet if they are still unaware of the measurement unit for energy itself.
This is the objective of this Energy educational program, so that people can become a society that is Energy Literate,
as well as can see themselves and participate in the energy solutions that are appropriate for the future, namely
the ones that are not endangering mankind nor have any harmful effects on the environment. (back to top)
Which is the correct unit for energy?
In the energy world, many units have been defined but as you know in the world standard there exists what is called the "metric system",
and there units such as meter, gram have been standardised. For all types of energy, Joule is already in the same metric class as gram,
meter, etc.
An alternative to Joule would be Calories and BTU, but those are not part of the metric system and more commonly associated with the imperial system instead.
Because the world is globally using the metric system, Joule is the correct unit to use. (back to top)
How do we eradicate energy illiteracy?
Simple! By making the public aware of the standard unit of measurement for energy.
Making Joule as the standard unit for all types of energy will eradicate our ignorance about energy.
The reason why we are not distance illiterate nor weight illiterate is because
we always use the same units. To weigh apples, potatoes or chicken we always use kilograms.
To measure the height of a person, the width of a table, or the length of fabric we always use meters or centimeters.
The frequent use has made us able to visualize how long one meter approximately looks like.
The same habit will arise if all types of energy is measured in Joule (kiloJoule or
MegaJoule). (kilo = thousand; Mega = million)
If we hear the unit Joule in all our energy talks we begin to build a "Database" in our "memory".
Every time we hear a new figure, we can immediately position it in our mental database and judge
whether the figure is large or small. If for example, the energy consumption of all fuel combustion cars
that we know today is between 3 and 10 MJ per km, then when a new car appears in the market with a consumption
of only 0.3 MJ per km, we can immediately judge that it is indeed a car that is more energy efficient than any we have known.
A fuel combustion car in the market today consumes between 3 to
10 MJ per km. An electric car consumes energy between 0.3 to 0.5 MJ per km.
When learning that an electric car only consumes 0.3 MJ per km instantly our eyes open wide...
why so much difference?! An electric car is 10 to 20 times more energy efficient than a fuel combustion car.
Only once we have known the unit of energy we can begin comparing... and once we have begun to evaluate and compare then we are no longer
energy illiterate.
So there is no other way to eradicate energy illiteracy other than to standardize its unit first.
Once we are no longer energy illiterate, we become conscious of the price of energy per MJ.
We will be able to conclude that if the price of 1 MJ of electricity is x cents and 1 MJ of fuel is also x cents,
therefore driving the electric car will be 10 to 20 times cheaper!
Well, immediately the energy solution for the future becomes clear, right? The solution is electricity, and that electricity should be
generated from sources that do not polute, such as geothermal and solar. (back to top)
Are we in an energy crisis?
Look what happened to the world’s oil stock

over a 400 million year time scale?
Yes we certainly are in a serious energy crisis!
1. 40% of our energy comes from Oil
2. Oil production is peaking Worldwide;
• Which means no more "cheap oil",
• Wars are being fought to secure the last cheap resources; disguised as
"War against Terror"
3. We are far from changing our burnivorous lifestyle which has lead to
devastating deterioration of the global environment,
4. Over 99% of the world’s population is energy illiterate,
5. This in turn leads to wrong policy & decision making, and worsening the crisis
further.
In fact the world’s energy and environmental crisis is not caused by a shortage of
energy resources but by tapping the wrong resources. And that in turn is caused
by energy illiteracy of the public, politicians and decision makers. (back to top)
What should we do in a crisis?
Make a balance sheet!
How do financial accountants make up a balance sheet? For sure in one currency.
But how do the "energy experts" make up the "Energy Balance Sheet"?
In barrels, cubic meters, metric tons, kiloliters, MTOE’s, Watts and Gigawatts,
Solar-Watts, Wind-Watts... and the list goes on...

Making an Energy Balance Sheet must be in the same unit. So a universal unit for all energy measurements is needed. (back to top)
What is "Peak-Oil"?
In 1954 Dr. M. King Hubbert, a scientist working at Shell, predicted that in the US
(the largest oil producer in the world at that time) the oil-production would peak
in the year 1970 and that this would have devastating consequences for the economy.

He had drawn the conclusion from the fact that the rate of discoveries of new
oil-resources were increasing with every year at a slower rate while the number
of explorations and used technologies were improving every year; and thus there
could be no other explanation than that they were nearing the peak of the discovery curve which
meant that at least half of all the oil under american soil must have been discovered.
(With let’s say 10% more exploration-efforts and better exploration technologies each year,
you would expect that you will find more than 10% more new oil resources,
but it turned out then with 10% more effort only 5% more was found).

His prediction turned out to be exactly true (missed by only 2 years);
after 1972 the US has seen a yearly decline in oil-production output.
The same Dr. Hubbert has studied all oil resources of the world and concluded
that by year 2007 the whole world would be in a state that the US was in 1972.
Meaning that the oil production can not be increased further and every year will go into further decline.
Many people are still debating this issue but some things are for sure not debatable anymore:
1) That Oil is a finite resource, and thus as any other finite resource being exploited will follow a bell curve.
2) That the world is extremely dependent on this resource for every day’s life
and that we have not yet prepared an alternative for oil.
3) That the speed of consumption is increasing every year by ever growing world population.
What types of energy sources do we still have available on earth?
Energy is a phenomena; it has no weight no volume no smell and cannot be
seen. The only way to know that energy was there is to measure the difference
before and after energy has done work.
How do we know that there is energy in Sun-Light?
You can do an experiment as follows: put a black metal plate in bright sunlight;
and you will find that the plate will become very hot after a few minutes.
The increase of temperature of the plate is proof that the light carried energy and
handed it over to the plate.
How do we know that there is energy in Wood?
You can burn the wood and feel the heat being released which is the proof that
energy was trapped inside the wood.
"Light carried energy and handed it over to the plate" and "energy was trapped
inside the wood" what does this mean? It means that both light and wood are
energy carriers. Basically all matter can carry energy inside; the plate that got
heated by the sunlight became the new energy carrier and received energy from
the sun which manifested itself as increase of temperature. When we take the
plate out of the sun again and put it in a cool place; the plate will cool down; it
will dissipate the heat to the surrounding air and the cool surface; the next energy
carriers.
Now lets look back at how the energy had traveled; the sun produces light; so
it handed energy over to light to be transported to earth; after arrival at earth
the light handed it’s energy over to the black plate which became hot and the
hot plate handed the energy through transferring it again to the surrounding
environment.
From above we can conclude that energy carriers are like participants of a "relay
race" in which each carrier passes the "energy-baton" or part of the baton on to
one or more other carriers.
From these phenomena of "the energy relay-race" we can conclude that all
energy around us is in fact a continuous flow of energy being handed over from
one carrier to one or more others and always in the direction from high to low.
We defined Light, Wood, coal, oil, gas and the Hot plate as energy carriers; but
what about a cool plate (at room temperature lets say 25°C); does this plate still
contain energy? Yes even a cool plate still contains energy and this can be proven
by putting the plate into a bucket of ice water of 0°C; when you do so the 25°C
plate will be going down in temperature; It will transfer its heat energy it had at
25°C and transfer that to the water which in turn will cause some of the ice to get
melted. If you take the plate out of the water and put it into room temperature;
the plate will slowly absorb new energy from the environment to bring it back to
the ambient temperature for example 25°C. Only if an object is cooled down to
minus 273°C (0 Kelvin) will all energy be gone. The absolute zero energy level
does not exist in nature on our planet; every piece of matter has at least a certain
temperature and as long as it is above 0 Kelvin there is still energy inside.
Wood, coal, oil, gas, stone and soil are all matter and can have a certain
temperature and thus contain energy. Wood coal oil and gas however do not
only contain energy in their mass but also in their chemical molecular structure.
This energy is "trapped" and we can release it for example through burning; and
therefore we can categorize those energy carriers as chemical energy carriers.
We all know that vegetation grows with the help from the sun through a process
called photosynthesis. The photosynthesis process is a process in which light
creates the bonding of atoms and molecules mainly oxygen with carbon dioxide
through an electrical process. And thus we can conclude that electricity is the
missing link between the chemical and light energy carrier.
But there is still one more type of energy carrier which is the energy carried by a
moving object. This type of energy is called kinetic energy; and we can place it
between hot and cold matter in the order of energy carriers. The reason to put
kinetic between hot and cold matter is that for example hot air will expand and
while it expands it causes air molecules to move and the moving will only stop
when the air has reached lower temperatures.

The total order of energy carriers becomes as follows:
Almost every "Energy Technology" (a Technology that produces an Energy Flow
from an energy carrier) that humans have mastered in the past 200.000 years
involves burning. Burning is the process of converting a chemical energy carrier
into heat energy. In a Combustion engine we burn a chemical energy carrier
through an explosion of the stuff in an air-mixture; the explosion results in a very
fast increase of temperature of the air making the air molecules shake so hard
(we get hot stuff) that the pressure rises enormously and consequently pushes
a piston away which in turn becomes kinetic energy (moving stuff) after which
the waste gasses leave the tailpipe as "Cool Stuff". In fact exhaust gasses of a
combustion engine still are very hot; and thus still contains a lot of energy; but
we simply cannot use the energy anymore because of the low pressure that is left
over at the end of the combustion cycle which cannot do much work anymore
other than taking care of the disposal of waste gasses which needs to be done as
well to let a new air-fuel mixture enter the combustion chamber.
The kinetic energy transferred to the mass of the spinning crankshaft and flywheel
can drive a car forward and every new explosion releases a bit new energy to
the process to keep the energy flowing. All the energy finally ends up as low heat
absorbed in the environment (cool stuff). When you have driven a car from home
to work and back home; all the energy of the fuel has been 100% converted
into low heat distributed all along the way you drove. The last bits of heat are
transferred to the air in your garage heating up the air in the garage and the air
will heat the walls and slowly leak out to the surrounding air of your garage...
Nothing of the energy got lost; it only traveled to lower energy carrier levels.
Unfortunately it is not only a few hundred cars; but close to a billion cars in the
world that convert chemical energy to heat every day while polluting the skies
and besides that tens of thousands of power stations burning and polluting and
resulting in all the energy that was trapped in the chemical carriers ends up as
heat in our environment and gasses in our atmosphere.
Every energy process that takes place around us follows the diagram above. A
wind generator taps into the kinetic energy stored in moving air (moving stuff).
The moving air resulted from pressure increase of air (hot stuff) that got heated
up by the sun in one area and thus started to flow to an area with lower pressure
which was less heated by the sun (cool stuff). (back to top)
How much energy is available for the coming 100 years? For the next 100 years, we have the following enery sources available:

The total global energy consumption is “only” 0.5ZJ per year; and thus from
above figures you can conclude that we do not need to worry to ever run out
of energy sources. We only need to worry about our present technologies to tap
energy getting obsolete.
The continuous burning of chemical energy carriers at yearly increasing quantities
(today we burn fossil fuels for 87% of all our energy use) causes our skies to get
so polluted that we even cannot see the sun anymore in most industrial cities
around the world. Human beings have become so obsessed with burning stuff
that they seem not to be realizing that oil is in fact a much too valuable stuff to
burn. In today’s modern world we cannot think of any product anymore that does
not contain oil-derivatives either directly used in the product itself or used in its
production-process.
We absolutely do not need to worry about running out of energy sources that
can energize our lives; but what we need to worry most about is running out of
raw materials to produce the durable consumer products we all love so much.
We need Oil to produce our plastics and fabrics and millions of other goods and
wood to build our homes and furniture.
The main reason to stop burning stuff is to conserve the stuff for durable purposes
and while doing so we also will address the global warming / Climate Change
Issue as well.
It is simple the real mission for the world’s society is to develop a
full electric economy and use chemical energy only for durable goods. We have
to start with electric transport systems and increase production of electricity from
light and geothermal heat sources which we have plentiful and which never run
out; and finally stop our primitive habit of burning everything. (back to top)
What is a "Burnivore"?
If we redefine the species on earth based on the way they access an energy
source we come to the following renewed definition of species:
Vegetation: Vegetation accesses the light energy flow from the sun and through the process
of Photosynthesis it converts Light into Chemically stored energy to build its cells
needed to grow and sustain its body structure.
Herbivore: Herbivores eat vegetation and release the chemically stored Energy through a
process of Metabolism and convert it to other forms of chemically stored Energy
which it distributes all over its body cells to build, grow and maintain its body
structure. The brain of the herbivore controls the conversion of chemically stored
energy from its body cells to kinetic and heat energy through an intricate network
of nerves distributing electric signals when certain sensors also connected through
nerves to the brain signal the need to do so.
Carnivore:
Same as Herbivores; except that it takes a shortcut; it does not eat the low density
energy carrier in the form of Vegetation but the meat from other animals that
have grown and stored energy as a result from eating this vegetation or other
carnivores.
Omnivore:
A combination of Herbivore and Carnivore; it eats both meat and vegetation.
Burnivore:
Same as Omnivores; with the difference that the burnivore uses 10 up to 1 million
times more energy than its own body is able to use. The Burnivore accesses an
energy flow through a process of burning all kinds of Chemical Energy (Wood,
Coal, Oil, Gas) to release Heat Energy and sometimes a tiny bit of Light. Heat is
used to cook food to make it easier to digest; and to expand air or gas to create
kinetic energy to propel a bike, car, truck, boat, airplane or rocket forward to
transport either itself or goods which it thinks are needed to improve its quality
of life.

Note 1: Due to the continuous increasing use of energy released by burning;
air pollution became a huge problem for the health of burnivores in the time of
industrial revolution of the burnivores. This problem got solved through the use
of electricity which made it possible to transport energy from a place far away
from densely burnivore populated areas to the densely populated areas (without
having the pollution in its direct neighborhood).
Note 2: The Burnivore species has a limited lifetime because it depends on
energy carriers that have been accumulated by natural phenomena over a
period of 400million years and are presently being burned at a rate which
gives the species about 25 more years if it can develop further technological
improvements to "suck out" the remaining energy carriers from the earths crust
in sufficient quantity and secondly if they can manage to repair the disastrous
effects the burnivorous lifestyle has already caused to the global environment.
The use of electricity as a mode of transport for energy which made it possible to
burn and pollute far from populated areas is not effective anymore because both
population and pollution have grown so dramatically that the two overlap again
as was the case in the early stage of industrial revolution causing health problems
and deterioration of quality of life. The smoke from coal burning in and around
cities for electricity production combined with the smoke from transport inside
cities has created thick layers of smog and environmental warming. This problem
of deteriorating air-quality is being countered by the use of air-conditioners in
transport vehicles and homes to pump out warm air from the burnivores direct
living environment. Those air-conditioners however use 3 joules of electric energy
to extract 1 Joule of heat from a room; and to produce 3 joules of electricity; the
coal burning electricity station needs to burn 10Joules of coal (turned into heat)
which makes it in total generate 10Joules of heat to extract 1 joule from a room.
This of course becomes a vicious circle; and thus air-conditioners have to work
harder and harder in a further deteriorating cycle.
Note 3: Burnivores have a very low energy literacy rate and therefore are not
able to do energy accounting and so they do not realize that the burnivorous
lifestyle is soon coming to an end. The shortage of easily extractable oil in past
years has already triggered burnivores to start cultivating special crops for the
sole purpose of burning but soon they will find that it will lead to food shortages
and even more environmental damage due to the even higher need of energy
and other resources like water to produce biofuel.
Note 4: The future of burnivores is very bleak; but fortunately the digestive systems
of burnivores for the basic energy needs are exactly the same as a new developing
species the electrivores; and thus burnivores if not hampered by tradition can
easily convert to become electrivores. Those burnivores who cannot unlearn their
habit will simply run out of stuff to burn... and finally burn their fingers... (back to top)
What is an "Electrivore"?
Electrivores are a new species that has evolved from the burnivore species.
The Electrivore has mastered energy accounting and has concluded that the
old fashioned burnivorous lifestyle cannot be sustained without burning
its fingers. Electrivores have come to the simple conclusion that when you
tap energy from a higher level energy carrier you automatically will develop
a higher quality of life.
This new species has developed a fully electrical energy based lifestyle; It uses
electricity to propel its bikes, cars and trains and maybe even airplanes in the
future for its transport and cooks its food with electric cooking devices and uses
numerous highly efficient electrical devices for communication; information and
entertainment.

Most importantly electrivores generate electric energy through non-burnivorous
methods like tapping it from light through photovoltaic panels and tapping it from
geothermal heat. Electrivores use chemical energy carriers only as a temporary
storage to convert back again to electric energy; for example to drive cars
and motorbikes. Electrivores will develop increasingly clever electricity storage
technologies; but today’s technologies already are good and affordable enough
to start a full Electrivorous lifestyle.
Electrivores will actively start replanting land areas that have been abused by
burnivores for the sole purpose of producing biofuels because the electrivores
understand that wood as a chemical energy carrier can be used in a much
more durable fashion than for the purpose of burning. At the same time they
understand that forests are needed to absorb the high levels of CO2 from the air
and produce the oxygen that all species on earth need.
The electrivores have a great future
if they are able to win the battle
against the still far outnumbering
burnivorous species about the usage
of the last stock of chemical energy
resources. The Electrivores want
to use it for production of durable
goods while the burnivores like to
burn those last resources which
in return will also block access to
the ultimate energy source of the
electrivore; the sun. (back to top)
Why is BioFuel making the energy and economic crises even worse?
The fact that governments worldwide support and step up production of biofuel
is a sign of energy illiteracy. It also shows how much man is addicted to burn everything to fulfill his energy needs.
Someone who is already energy literate will definitely never choose biofuel as a solution for the future
because that person knows biofuel is very inefficient, and also that it causes new problems:
in the world today where the total production of biofuel has not reached 1%, already
it has caused a jump in foodstuff prices from 200 to 300% and causing shortages of food supply in many countries.
Imagine when we have reached 10% of fossil fuel being replaced by biofuel, foodstuff prices will skyrocket tremendously and
will cause a scarcity of food. So it is clear that biofuel will only cause much more severe problems.
People who are already energy literate will be aware that the remaining stock of fossil fuels on Earth is only 42 ZJ.
The amount of energy we keep receiving from the sun for the next 100 years is 550,000 ZJ (70 times greater than fossil!) and we will never run out of it. Besides that, geothermal energy provides 10,000 ZJ available for generating electricity.
Sunlight and geothermal are both sources that are in great abundance, and the technology to convert it to electricity
without causing polution (no burning necessary) exists already.
Fuel combustion cars can be replaced by cars using electric technology, which by the way, have a higher performance than any fuel combustion car.
What else are we waiting for? (back to top)
What is the definition of Watt?
The definition of Watt is Joule per second. When we speak of consumption in general,
we always express it based on per another unit. For example, consumption of rice
10 liter per month, or water consumption of 100 liter per day.
It doesn't feel right to state consumption without per something, does it?
Why has no one questioned why in electrical consumption there is no per something.
A lamp consumes 100 Watt, a fridge consumes 70W, etc.
well, now it is obvious... the "per" has been hidden all this time by Watt!
The lamp that consumes 100 Watts means that it is consuming energy at a rate of 100
Joules per second. (back to top)
What is the definition of kWh and how much is it?
kWh is short for kilo-Watt-hour. A lot of people, including electrical engineers, often mistake kWh as kilowatt per hour.
If even the electrical experts make this mistake, what about the average consumer?
No doubt there has been a misunderstanding in the electrical units.
The misunderstanding arises from the fact that with the unit Watt, it does not show a per something. So that this lack of "per"
is filled in by inserting it into the name, making kWh become kilowatt per hour.
In fact, that is a big mistake!
The correct way is as follows:
KWh = kilo x Watt x hour
Kilo = 1,000
Watt = Joule / second
Hour = 3,600 second

Now, the question is, do you know precisely the price of electricity per kWh? (back to top)
How do we convert Watt to Joule?
For electric appliances using a continuous and steady electrical current consumption, it is easy to convert to Joule.
Conversion can be done by only multiplying the amount in Watt x 3,600 seconds to get the energy consumtion per hour.
A 100 Watt lamp for example will consume 100 Joule per second, and if left on for 1 hour will consume 100 x 3,600 = 360,000 J = 0.36 MJ per hour.
1 MJ electricity priced at let's say 1 euro cent, can provide energy to that lamp for : 1 / 0.36 = 2.8 hours. So you can conclude that
to leave the lamp for about 3 hours will cost you 1 euro cent. (back to top)
What is the objective of the Kajul educational program?
The objective of the Kajul education program is to make the public become aware of the main need in life, that is energy.
Everyone uses energy and without energy no one can live. Awareness about energy and the unit of energy
as well as its calculations, including knowledge of where that energy comes from, will be very important
in sustaining life in the long term. The public needs to be aware that the sources currently in use will be harder to obtain,
as well as more expensive, because the peak production has already been reached, and will be unaffordable by most of the population.
When that awareness is already raised, automatically the public will participate by choosing
appliances that are more energy efficient. Once the consumers are energy literate, and only buying energy efficient products,
the manufacturing industry will increase their product's efficiency and make efficiency as the key sales feature. Consequently that will
create a healthy competition to make even more energy efficient products.
Like it or not, the price of electricity will continue to rise, because the production costs will never cease to climb.
With a society that is already energy literate and thrifty in its energy consumption, such a rise in electricity cost will not have
much impact, because thanks to efficiency, electricity consumption will be decreasing.
With an increasing price of grid electricity, the electricity price of solar energy can then begin to compete, and therefore the polution from
fossil burning can be reduced further. (back to top)
Why is the program called "Kajul"?
Kajul is a popular name of the mascot who will be bringing forth to the public his story all about energy.
Kajul also happens to be a homonym for the abbreviated unit Kjoule or Kilo-Joule which means a thousand Joules.
Because the name Kajul is easy to remember, people will also easily remember the unit of energy, which is Joule.
Currently many electrical appliances and transportation devices use energy in the range of
Megajoules. With an increasing public awareness of energy efficiency, it is hoped that all devices in the future can
use energy as little as the kiloJoules range (Kajul).
For example, the current fuel combustion technology car consumes between 3 to 10 MJ/km.
The electric car technology already brings down the consumption from MJ range to the kiloJoule range (Kajul), because
the electric car only consumes between 300 to 500kJ per km (0.3 to 0.5MJ/km)
So, other than being a popular character name, the name Kajul also represents
the target for energy efficiency. Though energy figures nowadays are mainly in the MJ,
but in the future they will come down to kiloJoule... that is the mission of Kajul. (back to top)
What are the activities of "Kajul"?
The Kajul Energy Education and Awareness Program
will have 3 "pillars":
1. Designing & Introducing
an energy education
package for junior to senior
high-school students in
age category 15-21 in
cooperation with ATMI (Akademi Teknik Mesin Industri).
2. Production and Introduction
to National TV of Animated
“Edutainment” movie series
in cooperation with Progress
Animation (for age category
5 to 99).
3. Lobbying and motivating of
National Standardization
Institutes and Consumer
protection organizations to
adopt the Joule Standard.
How can you help make the "Kajul" program a success?
We from the Kajul Program team have the main mission of increasing the quality of life on earth.
Of course, this is a very broad mission, but we have found a very focused approach to reach that goal.
Quality of life is very dependent on the way we generate energy. The burnivore who burns everything to
fulfill his energy needs is an activity that is detrimental to the quality of life. The immediate environment
becomes poluted, causing many health disorders, and our global environment also becomes poluted, which causes global warming and
its harmful effects.
The main cause of the problem is the "burnivorous" activity, and the solution is to adopt an "electrivore" way of life.
Clearly people are reluctant to change lifestyles. But with an electrivore lifestyle we do not need to change styles,
in fact we are allowed to consume energy as much as we can afford, because using energy generated from sunlight and geothermal
will not damage our environment.
Your contribution to lead an electrivore lifestyle can be in the form as follows:
1) Educate yourself about energy using our educational material, and become a person who is no longer energy illiterate.
2) Educate your family and friends with your new knowledge of energy.
3) Begin to demand for energy information (power is not enough!) when buying electgric consumer goods.
Call the store manager and ask why is there no electrical energy information on the products being offered.
Demand the manager to tell the management that such energy information must be stated clearly.
4) Only buy electrical appliances with low energy consumption.
5)
Begin to note down the electrical energy you currently use every month in MJ.
(look at your electricity bill and multiply the consumption figure by 3.6)
6) Begin to memorize the price of electricity per MJ
(look at your electricity bill how much is the price for 1 kWh and then divide by 3.6)
7) Buy a Joule-Counter and place it on electrical appliances at home to make you
become aware of how much each device consumes.
8)Calculate and familiarize yourself with information about appliances that consume high amounts of energy. Try to calculate
the energy cost for running them per year.
9) remember the energy cost per year that you can save by replacing that appliance with another that
is more energy efficient. 10) Make a target to lower your electricity consumption.
